07 May 2016 05:32 Youngster Anthony Matteo had a continental debut to remember by helping Young Africans beat Angolan side, GD Sagrada Esperanca 2-0 in the first leg of the 2nd 1/8th round on Saturday at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Matteo introduced in the last ten minutes for Deus Kaseke struck a last gasp goal to give Yanga a commanding lead ahead of the second leg next week in Angola.
The win puts the Tanzanians in a good stead in their quest to make the last eight for the first time in history after achieving a similar fate in the CAF Champions League in 1998.
Midfielder Simon Msuva opened the score sheet on 72 minutes heading home a Geofrey Mwashiuya cross from the left.
Mwashiuya, another second half substitute replaced Malimi Busungu, who sustained severe injury and had to be rushed to hospital after colliding with Esperanca goalie Yuri Tavazes.
Yanga missed the services of Zimbabwean duo, Thaban Kamusoko and Donald Ngoma, two of the key actors behind their success this term, but tried to break the Esperanca wall as early as the first, with Juma Abdul shooting wide.
The Tanzanians maintained their dominance and captain Nadir Haroub ‘Cannavaro’ and Amissi Tambwe missed sitters in the tenth minute and four minutes later.
Esperanca tried to get a crucial away goal score away goal but Manuel Conha saw his long range effort dealt with easily by Yanga goalie Deo Munishi.
The host resumed by introducing Mbuyu Twite for Salum Telela, and the former almost made his presence felt with the opener moments later, but his effort went wide.
Yanga continued to pile pressure and Kaseke headed wide on 54 minutes before Msuva also failed to convert a good opportunity five minutes later.
In between, veteran Angolan midfielder Arsenio Cabungula fired a shot at goal which was no trouble for Munishi.
Esperanca brought on Paul Cafumingo, Estevao Manuel and Aderito Chosola for Roadro Semero, Antonio Olivera ‘Love’ and Osvaldo Palana but the changes could not aid them find the back of the net.
Luck will soon smile at the host as Msuva broke the deadlock before debutant Matteo sealed victory with the second in the dying minutes.
Earlier on Friday, holders a goal in each half from Zied Boughattas and Iheb Msakni ensured victory for holders Etoile du Sahel against visiting CF Mounana of Gabon in Sousse.
In Tunis, Ahly Tripoli of Libya settled for a barren draw with Egyptian debutants Misr Makkassa.
